Session Description

All professional coaches engage with many types of clients in their coaching practice.  As coaches, we do not know what topics clients will bring to each coaching session.  Sometimes, the topics presented by the clients may fringe into the realm of therapy.  When this scenario happens,

  • are coaches able to SPOT THE RED FLAGS around the topics presented?
  • are coaches able to identify that the client needs the support of a therapist and not of a coach?
  • what are the guidelines to support coaches in identifying the red flags?
  • which ICF CODE OF ETHICS should the coach refer to as a guide?
  • which ICF CORE COMPETENCIES should the coach refer to as a guide?
  • what are the recommended ACTION STEPS that coaches should undertake?

In this topic, the presenter will share her experience and knowledge on how to answer the questions posted above.  She will make reference to real case scenarios she has gathered from her experience as a Board Director of ICF Global Ethics Board as well as from her coaching experience.

When this scenario happens, what should coaches do?

A few issues arise at this point;

  • Are professional coaches able to SPOT that the topic presented is indeed not a coaching topic, rather the client is in need of the support of a therapist?
  • If coaches are able to SPOT the red flags and conclude that the client needs the support of a therapist, then what are the next steps the coach should undertake?

What are the guidelines provided by ICF Global to support the professional coaches on SPOTTING THE RED FLAGS AND UNDERTAKING THE RIGHT ACTION STEPS so as to continue adding value to the client
